Business License Requirements

Welcome to the City of Fountain Valley Business Community. An important part of commencing business includes obtaining the required business license and/or permit. In accordance with Municipal Code Section 5.04.080, a business must first obtain a Business License/Tax Certificate prior to conducting business in Fountain Valley. Your business license enables the City to ensure that your business meets the proper zoning and fire safety needs for your type of business activity. Your business license tax directly supports the community’s public safety costs.
  1. All highlighted areas on the Business Tax application pertaining to your business must be filled out.

  2. An "Application Processing Fee" of $35 applies to ALL new Business Tax applications.

  3. Fictitious Business Filing:
    1. If an in-town business and using a FICTITIOUS BUSINESS NAME that does NOT include the owner's surname (last name), they MUST FIRST file for a Fictitious Business Name Statement through the Orange County Clerk, Recorder or any local newspaper.

    2. We must have a copy of the filing when we accept a Business Tax application.
    3. The business address on the filing MUST match the business address on the Business Tax application.
    4. The ownership on the Fictitious Business Name statement must be EXACTLY the same on the Business Tax application.

  4. Corporation
    1. If the business is incorporated, a copy of the Articles of Incorporation must accompany the Business Tax application.

  5. Home Business Conditions (Ref: Sec21.42.060 F.V.M.C.)
    1. Acknowledgement of the Home Business Conditions Business Tax application. If there are any questions regarding this form or it's contents, they should be directed to the Planning Department at (714)593-4425. There is a one time Home Business permit charge of $35.00
