Registration:
Registration is on a first-come first-serve basis. Online registration is available at fountainvalley.org and will open at 1pm on Tuesday. Walk-In registrations will be accepted at the Fountain Valley Recreation Center, 16400 Brookhurst St, beginning at 8am on Saturday. Mail-in and Fax-in registrations are not recommended due to the high volume of registrations.

Wait lists:
If you are placed on a wait list, recreation staff will contact you if an opening becomes available. Due to the high demand of lessons, if you are enrolled in a class you will not be called from a wait list for the same session. Schedules are subject to change, please visit fountainvalley.org for current class offerings. When in doubt enroll your child in a lower level, it is easier to move a child up than down. On the first day, children will be evaluated and placed in appropriate levels according to their abilities. Staff reserves the right to move children between levels.

Withdrawal Policy:
All withdrawal requests must be received at least 5 days prior to the beginning of the session. All withdrawals are subject to a $5 processing fee per child, per class. All withdrawal requests received less than 5 days prior to the start of the session will be processed for 50% of the fees. No withdrawals will be processed once the session begins.

Level Info:
Parent and Me, 3 and under, ratio 8:1
This class exposes the child and parent to water orientation focusing on achieving a high level of comfort in and around water. The parent will be instructed in basic skills that will aid the child’s learning of elementary swimming skills. Parent/adult required one-on-one in water with the child.

Tiny Tots, ages: 3-6, ratio 6:2
Ages 3-6 years old (participants must be potty-trained) For children with little or no swimming experience.  Skills include: water entry, floating, flutter kicking, arm action, and basic pool safety.

Ages 6 and up
Level 1 ratio 8:2
For children with little or no swimming experience.  Skills include: water entry, floating, flutter kicking, and arm action on front and back, plus basic pool safety.

Level 2 ratio 8:2
Children must possess skills from the previous level and swim 10 yards without support on front and back.  Skills taught include freestyle with side breathing, backstroke, introduction to elementary backstroke.

Level 3 ratio 8:1
Children must be able to swim freestyle with side breathing and backstroke for 25 yards.  Skills taught include: Elementary Backstroke, Breaststroke kick, Scissor kick, and Dolphin kick.

Level 4 ratio 8:1
Instructor is no longer required in water.  Children must be able to swim freestyle with side breathing, backstroke, and elementary backstroke efficiently for two lengths of the pool (50 yards).  Skills taught include: Breaststroke, Sidestroke, and Butterfly.

Level 5 ratio 8:1
Instructor is no longer required in the water.  Children must be able to swim freestyle, backstroke, breastroke, elementary backstroke, and side stroke for three lengths of the pool (75 yards).  Instruction focuses on the coordination and refinement of all the strokes and increase distance.

Level 6 ratio 8:1
Instructor is no longer required in the water.  Student must be able to complete a minimum of 4 laps (100 yards) of freestyle and backstroke and 3 laps (75 yards) of all other strokes correctly.  Instruction focuses on building endurance in all strokes, and establishing proper stroke technique, allowing them to complete a 100 yard Individual Medley.

Semi-Private, $111 ($98 for session 1) ratio 2:1
Semi-private lessons cover skills taught in level 1 and level 2.  Skills will be adjusted according to child abilities.
