Republic Services Trash Update

The City is maintaining regular contact with Republic Services on the service delays due to the unanticipated work stoppage at Republic Services. We will update the community regularly on this webpage and social media.

Trash collection and street sweeping are scheduled as noted below. The City's trash collection and street sweeping contractors observe the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Please refer to the holiday schedules below to see how service will be affected. From a resident and business perspective, key instructions related to trash pick-up for the rest of this week include the following:

  • Republic has asked that residents and businesses continue to place your trash bins out on your regularly scheduled pick-up day but to expect service delays.  

    If collection does not happen on your regularly scheduled pick-up day, please leave your bins out along the curb until the trash is picked up.

    Of note, unlike typical collection days where separate vehicles will pick-up refuse, recycling, and green waste, given the current situation, only one truck will collect trash from all bins utilizing a co-mingled trash collection process.

  • As bins are left out to await trash service pick up, street sweeping will continue.  Street Sweeping will go around the trash bin as needed. The City will NOT issue street sweeping citations the week after December 25, 2021 and street sweeping citation will resume on January 2, 2022. 

    Please note the City has suspended code enforcement citation of trash can in public view.
During the duration of the current labor strike, the City will work to ensure that our residents are not charged for collection service that was not performed.

We appreciate our community’s patience throughout this frustrating ordeal, and the City will continue to provide any and all information we are aware of regarding trash services as soon as those details become available.

Republic Services has instructed all drivers to pick up all trash in commercial enclosures and any bags located to the side of residential carts. Residents can continue to leave bagged trash next to their carts for the remainder of this week. Republic Services have received feedback from some areas that the bagged is not getting picked up and they are sending drivers back to recover.

Procedures for December 20 - December 24, 2021
  • Republic Services have fully resumed waste and recycling services.
  • Residential, Commercial and Industrial waste and recycling services will be collected on their next scheduled service day.
  • Excess trash can be bagged and left next to the carts/bins for this week only.
  • Bulky item collection services has resumed, but may be delayed as we recover accumulated waste.
  • Customers who wish to receive automated call updates in the future from Republic Services can call the customer service center at (714) 847-3581 to have their phone number added to their address or account.
Procedures for December 27, 2021 - January 7, 2022
  • Residential, Commercial and Industrial waste and recycling services will be collected on their next scheduled service day.
  • Please call for a Bulky item pick up if you have more waste than will fit into your cart.
  • From December 26, 2021 through January 7, 2022, Republic Services will recycle non-artificial Christmas trees placed at the curb on your regular collection day. Collected trees are shredded into ground cover material and mulch to avoid disposal at the landfill. Trees taller than six (6) feet should be cut in half and have all lights and ornaments removed. Please place trees and cardboard next to your containers on your trash collection day. Flocked trees cannot be recycled and need to be cut into smaller pieces and placed in the trash.
  • Customers who wish to receive automated call updates in the future from Republic Services can call the customer service center at (714) 847-3581 to have their phone number added to their address or account.

Republic Services is pleased that we were able to reach agreements for new contracts with the union that represents our Orange County employees. We take pride in providing all of our employees a total rewards package that includes competitive wages
and comprehensive benefits. We look forward to resuming regular service in our communities as soon as tomorrow, and we are grateful to our municipal partners for their patience during this work stoppage. Among them, we appreciate the support and
leadership of the City of Anaheim, which assisted in keeping the operation running and
helped encourage a resolution.

Procedures for missed carts week of December 13 – December 17
 We have fully resumed waste and recycling services as of Friday, December 17, 2021.
 Residential waste and recycling service for Friday, December 17 will be collected on
Friday, December 17.
 Any residential waste and recycling services that were not collected for Thursday
residential customers this week will be collected on Saturday, December 18.
 Residential waste and recycling services for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday will be
collected on their next scheduled service day.
 Excess trash can be bagged and left next to the carts for this week only.
 Bulky item collection services will resume Monday, December 20 but may be delayed as
we recover accumulated waste.
 Commercial & Industrial will resume as normal starting Friday December 17.
 Customers who wish to receive automated call updates in the future from Republic
Services can call the customer service center at (714) 847-3581 to have their phone
number added to their address or account.
 Thank you for your patience as we recover all accumulated waste.

Republic Services reached a tentative agreement with the labor union.  While waiting for a fully executed agreement, they anticipate full staff tomorrow. Here is what we know.

Residential Trash

  • Residential Friday route will be serviced tomorrow as scheduled. 
  • Republic will also catch up on missed trash pickup from Tuesday to Thursday.
  • If possible, the City of Fountain Valley requested a Saturday service to catch up.  (Republic is not able to commit due to possible exceedance of working hours) 
  • Republic is requesting all residents to continue to leave trash cans out for service if they have not been serviced yet.

Commercial Trash

  • Republic will resume Friday scheduled commercial customers.
  • They will also catch up on missed commercial trash pick-up from the past week.

Republic Services was able to secure additional resources to start residential trash pick-up today. They are picking up Tuesday's route today. Please leave out trash for both Tuesday and Wednesday scheduled pick up. Treat it like a Holiday schedule with one day delay.

Commercial pick up is running at reduced capacity. However, Republic will continue to add additional resources as they become available.

Republic Services announces service delays that will affect Fountain Valley residents. Trash and recycling service has been temporarily delayed due to an unanticipated work stoppage at Republic Services. Republic is advising residents to leave all bins at the curb for service. There is one driver in Fountain Valley and the driver is prioritizing residential trash carts. Recycle and green waste will be serviced as soon as possible. Street sweeping operations will continue on schedule. Please see the attached statement for more information. Trash Collection Schedule


Residential trash collection is scheduled weekly. Click on the map to the right to find out when trash collection is scheduled in your neighborhood. Trash, recycling and green waste carts should be placed along the curb by 7:00 a.m., and stored out of public view by 9:00 p.m. on your scheduled pick up day.

Holiday Trash Collection Schedule
Christmas and New Year Holiday - The Christmas holiday is on Saturday, December 25, 2021 and the New Year holiday is on Saturday, January 1, 2022. Residential trash collection will occur as regularly scheduled. In observance of the Christmas holiday on Saturday, December 25th, there will be no commercial trash collection. In addition, in observance of the New Year holiday on Saturday, January 1, 2022, there will be no commercial trash collection.

Christmas Tree Pick Up Extended

Christmas Tree Pickup has been extended this year until January 14, 2022 due to COVID related staffing shortages.  Please leave your non artificial tree (free of ornaments and lights) out by your carts on your regularly scheduled collection day.  Trees must be shorter than 6 feet in length so please cut if taller than 6 feet.  If your tree is not collected the week of January 3-7 on your service day, Republic will return the week of January 10-14 to collect it on your scheduled service day.  You may also take your tree to Republic Services in Huntington Beach at 17121 Nichols Lane, Gate 4 to drop off free of charge. Christmas Tree and Cardboard Recycling
Republic Services will be offering Christmas tree and cardboard recycling. From December 26, 2021 through January 7, 2022, Republic Services will recycle non-artificial Christmas trees placed at the curb on your regular collection day. Missed Trash Collection: If your trash, recycling, or yard waste was not emptied on your normal collection day, please contact Rainbow Environmental/Republic Services within 24 hours of your collection day (including Saturday morning) at (714) 847-3581 to arrange for a make-up collection. Missed pickups are typically collected the next business day, depending on time of day that Rainbow was notified. Please leave the cart out at the curb so that it can be emptied.

Please remember to place carts for collection by 6:30 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Each of the three collection trucks can come at any time between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Street Sweeping Schedule

Click on the map to the right to find out when street sweeping is scheduled for your street. All vehicles and trash carts need to be off the street on street sweeping day to allow for proper cleaning of the street. Vehicles parked on the street will be cited.

Holiday Street Sweeping Schedule
Christmas and New Year Holiday - The Christmas holiday is on Saturday, December 25, 2021 and the New Year holiday is on Saturday, January 1, 2022. There will be no changes to the street sweeping schedule as the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays fall on the fifth week of the month. Therefore, street sweeping will not be affected.
