The playground at the Sports Park is a favorite among families and is the City’s most widely used playground. It was built in 2007 as part of the Sports Park Project and has been enthusiastically used by kids for the past 10 years. During that time, staff has made several spot repairs to the rubber playground surfacing. However, the 5,000 square foot play surface is currently in very poor condition and in need of replacement due to ongoing wear and tear.
Fortunately, at the April 18 City Council Meeting, City Council approved the replacement of the top coat with a new poured in place surface. Replacing the top coat now will make the playing surface safe and accessible, as well as allow the City to preserve the existing cushion layer underneath before it begins to deteriorate.
The playground area at the Sports Park will be closed temporarily while the top coat is replaced. City Council also approved the repair of the playground surface at Nieblas Park and the replacement of five lights at Helm Park so residents can expect to see those repairs as well.
