Are My Takeout Containers Recyclable?

Sept 2021 - Are My Takeout Containers Recyclable

Some plastic takeout containers are recyclable. To determine if the takeout containers are recyclable, look on the bottom for a recycling symbol with a number inside. Usually #1-2 are recyclable (recyclable materials are different depending on location and processing).

Clean paper containers can be recycled. An example of this is a cardboard drink holder. Moreover, most beverage containers like plastic cups, aluminum cans, and juice cartons are all recyclable.

There are containers that are not recyclable and should be thrown in the trash. These include polystyrene clamshells and cups and coated paper containers, such as Chinese food takeout containers.

Other types of containers should be composted or thrown into the trash. These include soiled cardboard containers, like a greasy pizza box, or used napkins. Potato or corn starch utensils are biodegradable and can go into the compost bin. Other plastic utensils should be thrown in the trash.
