[ARCHIVED] FasTrak Transponder and Toll Road Updates

toll road

Over the years, we've seen transponders change from large to small, interchangeable hard-case devices, that could be easily moved from one vehicle to the next. Yet, FasTrak has introduced a new digital transponder that takes up less space on FasTrak users front windshields.

During the beginning of last month (June 2019), The Toll Roads of Orange County mailed out 15,000 new sticker transponders per weekday to FasTrak account-holders. The new transparent, bandage-size, sticker transponder allows for simple and easy placement, as it adheres to the front windshield of users vehicles, meaning transponder owners will no longer have to worry about replacing the velcro backing of their transponder.

Another bit of exciting news is that as of July 1, 2019, the Toll Roads of Orange County will eliminate TCA's monthly account maintenance fee for FasTrak accounts, leading to an average savings of nearly $50 per year for most FasTrak customers. Beginning October 2019, FasTrak customers will have the ability to utilize a "Pay as You Go" feature which will allow for toll fees to be charged to an on-file credit card as fees are incurred, instead of when a certain threshold is reached.

Here are some helpful tips to consider after receiving your transponder:

  • Adhere the sticker transponder to your windshield – Follow the mounting instructions on the sticker packaging or website TheTollRoads.com/sticker.
  • Don’t adjust the sticker transponder – Moving or adjusting it once adhered will cause it to break and become unusable. If this happens, a replacement can be ordered online or via The Toll Roads app.
  • Recycle your old transponder – If you have an old standard hard-case FasTrak transponder, you can dispose of it the way you would a battery. But, if you carpool on designated express lanes throughout California, keep using your switchable FasTrak transponder to be eligible for carpool discounts.
