May is National Physical Fitness and Sports month. It’s a great time to look at increasing your overall fitness and to consider getting involved in local sports within your community. Did you know that regular physical activity increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life? It also reduces your risk for high blood pressure, heart disease, and some types of cancer.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans recommend that adults:

  • Aim for 2 hours and 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity each week (Aim for 30 minutes, 5 days per week). Moderate activity includes things like walking fast, dancing, swimming, and raking leaves.
  • Do muscle-strengthening activities – like lifting weights or using exercise bands – at least 2 days a week.

Locally, there are a number of great sports programs you can join and our City website,, is a great place to start the search for activities to be a part of. Here are just a few sports leagues with teams forming in the next few weeks: (various) (softball) (basketball) (volleyball)

No matter what shape you are in, you can find activities that work for you, even if it’s a nightly walk around your block. I have also included a few great recipes to support an active and healthy life. Together, we can rise to the challenge and get more active during the month of May!
